A SHORT HISTORY

In the late 1980s, Michael Gurian discovered that most parents, professionals and community members were not being given crucial information on how boys and girls and women and men are naturally different.  Parents, educators, helping professionals and corporate and governmental executives and employees needed deeper understanding of how boys and girls learn and grow differently and women and men live, work and lead in their own unique ways.

Beginning in 1989, Michael developed interdisciplinary trainings (combining information from neuro-biology, biochemistry, anthropology, psychology and sociology) for teachers, parents, businesses, government agencies, and others professionals.   Over a ten year period, he researched, wrote, and provided training in male/female brain difference.  THE WONDER OF BOYS was published in 1996.  It was the first book of its kind to base its parenting philosophy on gender information from the brain sciences.  THE WONDER OF GIRLS, it's companion book, was published five years later.

In 1998, Michael was invited by the Missouri Center for Safe Schools and the University of Missouri-Kansas City to develop the first Gurian Institute pilot study.  This took place through the University of Missouri-Kansas City--a two-year pilot program involving six communities in Missouri. Michael and the Gurian Institute-Missouri staff trained teachers, administrators, criminal justice personnel, and parents in six school districts.

This pilot study--as well as many of the teachers' innovations and results--is reported in BOYS AND GIRLS LEARN DIFFERENTLY! A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS, by Michael Gurian and Patricia Henley (former director of the Missouri Center for Safe Schools and the Gurian Institute at UMKC), with co-author Terry Trueman (Jossey-Bass/John Wiley, April 2001).

In 2000, at the end of the pilot, the Gurian Institute trainings extended  reach beyond Missouri into the rest of the U.S.  The Gurian Institute Training Division was formed in Colorado Springs in 2002 in order to further develop the BOYS AND GIRLS LEARN DIFFERENTLY TRAINING PROGRAM™.  Led by Kathy Stevens, the GITD (www.thegitd.com) has now successfully trained schools and communities in most of the United States, most of the provinces of Canada, and overseas.  THE MINDS OF BOYS: SAVING OUR SONS FROM FALLING BEHIND IN SCHOOL AND LIFE was published in 2005 by Michael and Kathy.  This book includes up-to-date innovations and information regarding boys' needs in schools, homes, and communities.

Over the last two years, expansion of the Gurian Institute's research and trainings includes new resources for businesses — our Corporate Division and for therapists, social workers and criminal justice professionals — our Human Services Division.  While the Institute's work has always included parent friendly techniques, books and training, 2006 also marks the expansion of the Gurian Institute's programs into a separate Family Division.
